WHAT WILL IT DO?

Allow 17-year-olds, who will be 18 at the time of the next general election, to vote in primary elections and special elections.

ARGUMENTS FOR:

There is a disadvantage for those whose 18th birthday falls between the primary and general election compared to those who are old enough to vote in the primaries. This is significant because the primary elections directly influence the candidates on the ballot for the general election. Expanding voter rights to everyone who would be eligible to vote in the general election, allows more people to cast the vote that best matches their own values.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST:

17-year olds are legal minors and likely still live at home with their parents under their guardianship and influence. As a minor, a 17-year old may be strongly impacted by the political views of their parents, and as a result may vote in a way that does not fit their own values. Allowing minors to vote in primary elections will not encourage independent thought and voting.
