MAKENZIE HANKS FREEDOM - 14
MAKENZIE HANKS - FREEDOM 14
/OVERVIEW
In 2021 Our Own started it’s first scholarship program meant to empower the next generation of student leaders. One of our first recipients was non other than Makenzie Hanks, who committed to Lincoln University.
Like most HBCU’s, Lincoln University was suffering financial challenges due to Pennsylvania
House Bill 1461 lacking sufficient votes. Exasperated, Our Own scholar Makenzie Hanks decided to take action. Action that was meant to foster real policy change. Rather than the usual social media commentary and in-person protest that promotes the organizers more than the cause.
Hearing from and with the support of her fellow students, Makenzie helped organized a series programmatic moments that culminated with a 66-mile march from Lincoln University. The student marchers, earning their nickname the “Freedom Fourteen” were undeterred. Through the days of bitter cold their message gained steam along with a rally of supporters all the way to the state capital.
Weeks after the march, HB 1461 was signed by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Lincoln University received a 21% funding increase totaling over $18 million. Four additional Pennsylvania State Colleges received support through passage of HB 1461 as well.
Our Own is proud of Makenzie for doing what most only hope to do. Be a apart of something bigger than self for the empowerment of others. She truly has embodied the principals of Lincoln University which are to Learn, Liberate, and Lead. Our Own is proud to be on Makenzie’s journey and supporting her strategy, content and financial support. A phenomenal Black woman who is only just getting started!
